Rain City Line Up Announced!
The line up for the second installment of Rain City Chronicles has been announced! (Coming from a journalism background, that’s not a good leading sentence ’cause it’s past tense. But it’s the sentiment that I’m stressing so forgive me and read on.)
RCC is an on-going storytelling night that was co-founded by Karen Pinchin and Lizzy Karp and me (all pictured above.) Storytellers are given up to seven minutes to tell a story about the evening’s theme. This time around, the theme is luck. It takes place on Monday, March 29th at the Western Front, 7 p.m.
So here’s who’s going to be on the bill:
Actor Nadiya Chettiar
Comedian, activist and author Charlie Demers
CBC Radio 3 host Lana Gay
Communications whiz Pamela Hart
Guardian blogger Colin Horgan
Vancouver Is Awesome founder Bob Kronbauer
Globe and Mail reporter Marsha Lederman
Journalist Erin Millar
Librarian Rebecca Slaven, accompanied by Andre of The Obvious Peaks and Valleys
With musical guest and former P3 interviewee Louise Burns aka Moonshiner!
CANNOT WAIT! ALL CAPS EXCITED!

Because I’ll NEVER go on Plenty of Fish
Confidential to the handsome fellow with thick-framed glasses and stylish but simple outfit who I saw on the Cambie Street Bridge a few days ago: Please find me. You were something out of a dream. (Unless you’re socially retarded. Or an alcoholic. Or lazy. Or have dad issues. Then, just keep walking.)

Memories of the Cokewoods
Corey Haim died this week. It didn’t really surprise or affect me that much but it got me thinking about a few things. My old friend dated him straight out of high school in the late 90s. He was living with his mom at the time and recording an album, which my friend said sounded like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. She always had crazy stories about him, which I’ll refrain from telling because it seems mean at this point. If I were a Z list star, I’d do my best to steer clear of the cliched addition path and be more like Barry from Eastenders via Extras (though a quick look at his IMDB page shows he’s not been out of work for a while, if ever.)
Corey Haim died in the Oakwoods. Years ago I spent some time there. They’re monthly apartment rentals that are meant for child stars and their parents – but they are so much more. There was this big sign out front that said “OAKWOODS: HOME OF THE FAMOUS AND ALMOST FAMOUS.” During my time there, I came across a few celebs who were also spending time there: Scott Weiland, who’d just got out of rehab, and Rick James, who overdosed a week after I left. They shot pornos at the Oakwods and we’d occasionally see the actresses in the hot tub. I remember there was a canteen in the middle of the grounds that sold snacks and some produce. Actors who’d stayed there had given the cashier their headshots to put up on the wall (not uncommon in LA.) The only one I recognized was Corky from Life Goes On.
My favourite memory of the Oakwoods (which I always refer to as the Cokewoods) was in the middle of my visit. My dear friends Natalie and Dante and I felt restless, bored and trapped. Transportation in LA isn’t the greatest so we decided to make the most of our time on these weird grounds. We ended up making these alcoholic slushies and lounging by the pool all afternoon, drunk. Picture above.
(Funny, In California, as sung by Neko Case, just came on my iTunes. Fitting.)

So happy
I love my new website. Most of the kinks should be sorted out. If you see something, please do get in touch. I love it when you get in touch. But yeah, welcome to my online presence. It’s been a long, long time in the works. I’m really happy it’s finally arrived. Thanks to Sean Sullivan, web designer and whiz kid, for his patience, enthusiasm and all around awesomeness. And to Katie Lapi for coming up with my perfect logo (the heart and pencil.) I am so lucky and happy. Please let me know what you think.

Like the Disney movie song!
Almost there…
This is a test so I can figure out how to use my new WordPress blog. If you’ve stumbled on here, be aware that we’re not 100% finished this website. It’s been soft launched ’cause there’s a bunch of kinks we’re sorting out. Namely, the writing samples. But that’s a-coming. As a test, I’ve tried to attach a photo from an apron party I recently attended.
Incoherent post, I know, but I’m just so excited to officially launch this sucker!
